Diocese of Kuching
Kuching
A place of memory, love, and connection — rooted in the heart of Kuching's historic city centre.
Our Beginning
The idea for The Anglican Columbarium Kuching was first mooted in 2019. After much prayer, thoughtful discussions and research on the setting up and operations of a columbarium, the Diocesan Standing Committee gave its approval the following year.
This was not just a practical decision — it was a heartfelt response to the needs of families who want a dignified, lasting place to remember their loved ones.
The Need
Anglican cemeteries in Kuching were nearing capacity, and those with available space often required families to travel a considerable distance.
The new cemetery at Prutan lies 27 kilometres away — which may prove far for families to visit regularly.
Traditional graves require ongoing maintenance, which can be challenging when loved ones are far away.
The columbarium is conveniently located in town, easily accessible, and well maintained, making visits easier for families.
With cremation becoming more common, it offers a respectful way to keep loved ones close to home.
Located in Kuching's historic city centre, it brings families together in a familiar, meaningful place.
The Project
A team of professionals was appointed, approvals secured, and the project began in January 2024. The columbarium now stands beside the Old Cemetery at McDougall Road — a place that connects the past with the present.

Our Purpose
The Anglican Columbarium is more than a building — it is a place of memory, love, and connection. It ensures families can honour those they cherish in a setting that is accessible, cared for, and rooted in the heart of Kuching's historic city centre.
"It stands as a symbol of compassion and continuity, reminding us that even in loss, love endures."
Our Church
The Anglican Diocese of Kuching serves the Anglican community across Sarawak and Brunei, with a heritage rooted in the arrival of missionaries in 1848 and its establishment as a Diocese in 1855. For over 170 years, it has faithfully proclaimed the Gospel of Jesus Christ through worship, discipleship, and service.
The Diocese is a vibrant network of parishes and congregations in both urban and rural communities, nurturing believers in their faith and reaching out in love to those in need. It also continues a strong tradition of education through 50 Anglican mission schools such as St. Thomas's and St. Mary's - both in Kuching - shaping generations with Christian values and purpose.
Through the House of the Epiphany, the Diocese equips clergy and lay leaders for faithful ministry, strengthening the Church for present and future service.
Led by the Right Reverend Datuk Danald Jute, the 14th Bishop of Kuching, and centred at St. Thomas's Cathedral, the Diocese remains committed to its calling—to know Christ and make Him known, serving all with compassion, unity, and hope.
